Greetings to all of our club members, visitors, and guests!

We welcome you to the regular meetings of the North Houston Astronomy Club on the 4th Friday of every month.

The Kingwood campus is located on the west side of I 69 (US Highway 59), north side of Kingwood Drive, and NW of the Kingwood Medical Center.

Asterisms: Signposts in the Sky!

The Great Square of Pegasus is one of the most commonly known asterisms accepted by most amateur and professional astronomers. The Great Square can be used as a guide to navigating one’s way across the night sky to finding other stars and Deep Sky Objects.

Dr. Aaron Clevenson will present his novice talk on Asterisms. Unlike constellations for which there are 88 officially recognized from the North to South Celestial Poles, asterisms are not official star patterns but can be used by amateur and professional astronomers in the star hunting for objects from stellar binaries to clusters of galaxies far, far from Earth. There are lists of the most commonly known asterisms, but many groups of astronomers in different local regions and countries will have their own special group of asterisms for which any set of DSOs (Deep Sky Objects) can be found by using these star patterns to find such objects in the night sky!

Misconceptions About Astronomy!

There are many misconceptions in Astronomy from the misunderstood concepts about the stars to the common internet rumor that the planet Mars will from time to time appear in the night sky as big as the Full Moon with the naked eye!

Dr. Clevenson will finish up the evening with his main presentation on the Misconceptions in Astronomy. There are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings about Astronomy that is spread about into the general public by the mass media, social media, and internet rumors on various blogs. These rumors can range from the simple to the very bizarre such as the old internet rumor about ‘the planet Mars being as big as the Full Moon with the naked eye‘. It is important for every Astronomer to attend this event and learn about all these misconceptions with the process of attaining the tools necessary to dissuade the general public from having a belief in such misconceptions. The truth is far more interesting than the rumors spread about my scientific ignorance about the Earth and Universe.
