Join us at the 6:30 FYI session to learn about different types of telescopes! And at 7:30 we will have our featured presentation with Stephen Hummel who will speak about the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve. We are looking forward to both and hope you will join us for a fabulous night of astronomical goodness.
Presentation Summary:
Completed in March of 2022, the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve is the largest certified Dark Sky Place in the world with over 15,000 square miles of land in Texas and Mexico. It is also only the second dark sky place to cross an international border. The reserve is the result of decades of outreach and education efforts on dark skies led by McDonald Observatory, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the National Park Service, but only possible through broad partnerships and support from dozens of communities, organizations, and protected lands. The reserve is an ambitious effort to protect the night sky for future generations, and a potential model for other regions- including major cities- to follow.
