From My Perspectiveby Aaron Clevenson, President
The days are getting longer, the air is getting warmer, and I imagine that the mosquitos will be out in force. Spring has sprung and summer is on its way. Now is the time to get out the astronomical equipment, dust it off, and get out there and observe. Observing the celestial wonders is one of the great benefits of doing astronomy. As our Dark Site Search Committee continues their efforts to find us a replacement for our previous dark site, let's not forget our local sites. We currently have two that are available every evening, no reservations required.
The first is the site of the new Administaff Observatory at Jack Fields Elementary School in Humble. If you want the lights off, we do need to let them know three days before you want to go. The school district is more than happy to turn them off. We had a problem with some lights on some temporary classrooms at the Star Party, but they will have them off the next time. To have the lights turned off, please contact me.
The second is the airport west of Porter. It s out Highway 1314, 5-6 miles from Highway 59. The owner requests that we stay off the grass and stay off the runway. He has suggested we should use the taxiway past the hangers.
We also have access to the Sam Houston State University Observatory site. This is northeast of Huntsville. There is a gate with a combination lock. To gain access, please contact me. This site is available every evening, but first preference goes to SHSU classes.
The Dark Site Search Committee is in the process of evaluating a number of dark site options further away. If you would like to participate or if you have some suggestions of landowners to contact, please contact a club officer of a member of the committee.
If you plan to visit one of the sites or go to any other observation outing, please send a note out on Netslyder to let others know. It is always fun (and safer) to have some companions when observing. I for one, would like to join you. Have a great April and May. And please, share your experiences with the rest of us through Netslyder and through these Newsletters. If we can't be there, we can at least live the experience vicariously through you. Happy Hunting!
